Canadian consumers do not experience brands in a neat, linear funnel. They may first notice a brand on television or out-of-home, encounter it again through streaming or social media, search for it days later and then return through a paid ad before finally taking action.
Yet media is still often planned and evaluated one channel at a time. Awareness tactics are expected to prove immediate conversions, while search and performance social receive credit for demand they may have captured, but didn’t create.
An effective omnichannel media strategy addresses this disconnect. It brings channels together around a shared audience and strategy that are defined roles across the customer journey. The goal is to build a connected ecosystem in which the media channels work together effectively.
Performance media is exceptionally effective at capturing existing consumer intent. Paid search can connect with audiences actively looking for a brand or service; retargeting tactics can bring an interested visitor back; social and digital video can provide additional information and a sense of urgency. But these tactics are more effective when people already recognize the brand, understand what it offers and have a reason to trust it.
That is the role of upper-funnel media. Channels such as television, streaming, audio, out-of-home and premium digital environments can build a connection to the brand before a consumer even enters the market. They introduce the brand, create familiarity and establish itself within the consumer consideration set.
We have seen this relationship in our own work with UROSPOT. We analyzed performance across the funnel to better understand how awareness and consideration tactics influenced lower-funnel activity. Rather than looking at each platform in isolation, we examined whether periods of stronger awareness coincided with increased search and social activity, more booked consultations and improved efficiency through lower costs per click and acquisition. The trends showed that when awareness was stronger,
lower-funnel performance generally improved—reinforcing the role of search and social in capturing demand that other media helps create. While these patterns are directional, they provide a more complete view of how the media mix works together.
The takeaway is that performance results cannot be evaluated in isolation. Conversion results should be evaluated along with the media channels that generated the awareness and interest that led up to the
Omnichannel planning works best when the strategy begins with the audience and customer journey rather than a predetermined list of channels and tactics.
High-reach media introduces the brand and creates broad familiarity among future buyers. According to Spring 2026 Numeris data summarized by thinkTV, Total TV—linear television plus broadcaster streaming—reached 81.6% of Canadian adults each week and accounted for 71% of their video viewing time. The findings reinforce the role scalable media can play in establishing a strong foundation for the rest of the plan, while also showing how traditional and streaming environments now work together to build reach.
Once the audience knows the brand, targeted tactics across channels such as video, audio, content, social, display and contextual placements can explain the brand in greater detail. Creative can address different needs, demonstrate expertise and give consumers
reasons to choose the brand.
Search, location-based tactics, retargeting and performance focused social can make it easy for people to act when intent is highest. These channels should be optimized against meaningful actions such as qualified leads, booked appointments or sales—not clicks alone.
CRM, email, sequential messaging and remarketing can continue the relationship after the first interaction or purchase. This supports repeat business, referrals and long-term customer value.
The channel mix will vary by audience, category, geography and budget. The task is to determine what each channel must accomplish and how it supports the next stage of the customer journey.
Consistency matters—but should be tailored to each channel
A connected strategy does not require placing the same advertisement everywhere. It requires a consistent concept that can adapt to the strengths of each environment.
A television or streaming spot may create emotion and explain the larger brand values. Audio can reinforce a memorable message. Out-of-home can deliver a simple, high-impact influence close to a location or purchase decision. Social and online video can demonstrate, educate or engage with audiences. Search can answer the questions that customers have.
This balance between consistency and channel-specific nuances helps a brand become easier to recognize while giving consumers the information they need at each stage. Measure the ecosystem, not only the last engagement One of the biggest obstacles to full-funnel planning is measurement. The final click is easy to see, but it rarely represents every influence that led to a decision.
A better measurement framework aligns metrics with the role of each stage:
No single report will explain every interaction. Platform data, web analytics, brand studies and sales outcomes should be reviewed together. Marketers should also account for lag in the customer journey: awareness created today may influence branded search, direct traffic or conversion weeks or months later.
This broader view makes overall campaign optimization more intelligent. Instead of cutting a channel because it produced few last-click conversions, marketers can examine whether it increased reach, improved search response, strengthened conversion rates elsewhere or contributed to incremental sales.
Brand building and performance marketing are not competing approaches. One creates and strengthens demand; the other captures and converts it. An omnichannel strategy provides a holistic approach that allows marketers to manage and optimize investment and performance across all channels ensuring that each one delivers effectively based on their role in delivering successful campaign and business results.
The result is a more efficient and effective media ecosystem—from the first moment of awareness to the final conversion, and beyond.
